Resignation & Counter Offer

Resignation

Make sure that you have made your decision before you get to this stage as it is un-professional with all parties involved if you would still consider options from your current employer.

Nobody enjoys this part of the process and it can be emotionally draining for many people, but try to focus on how you are going to feel afterwards.

It is always best to write the resignation letter before hand as it can be difficult verbally to convey your reasons behind your decision. Make sure that the letter is succinct, polite and thank them for their help during your employment with them. This can always help when you require future references.

Counter Offer

Your current employer will obviously not wish to lose you, as it is harder for them to replace you and re-train new personnel. Counter offers are extremely common and it could be very likely that your current employer will try to entice you to stay with more money or a change in role. They may say it was already on the cards to make it look better, however, you must ask yourself three questions:

Why has it taken to get to this stage for them to offer you this increase in remuneration?

Why did they not previously mention this change in role?

Above all, remember your reasons for looking for a move in the first place!

Most people who accept a counter offer will leave the following year as situations rarely change and your reasons for the initial move still remain.

Agree a provisional departure date at the time of resignation, it can always be changed, but it sets up a framework within which everyone can plan for the future.

If you are hoping to leave before your official notice period ends, suggest targets for you to achieve that would allow them to be able to release you earlier than contractually required.

In the very unlikely event of the meeting turning sour, retain your professionalism and close the meeting at the earliest opportunity. They may well need time to reflect on your news. Such a response may further strengthen your resolve that you are doing the right thing.

If a complication arises in the event of a counter offer, always speak to your consultant first before making any decisions as it may help to discuss with an independent professional.
