When a business has found a suitable skilled person from overseas, the long stay temporary business program allows the person to be sponsored for a visa. The period of the visa can be from three months up to four years. The visa gives the applicant the right to work in Australia for the sponsors. Family members may be included in the application and their visas carry no work restrictions.

The sponsoring business must apply for a “Business Sponsorship”, the first stage of the visa application. This allows employers to sponsor a number of temporary business entrants within a two year period. This application must show that business complies with immigration requirements, which include an adequate level of training of Australian citizens and financial capacity to sponsor. A business sponsorship may be granted for multiple places and is valid for either two years or until the number of positions is filled

At the second stage of the nomination the position is examined to ensure it meets the skill and minimum salary requirements.

The third stage is the visa application, where the applicant is assessed for holding the appropriate skill and qualification level for the position. In most cases, the applicant and any family members must undergo a chest X-ray to satisfy the health requirements. In some cases, a medical will also be required.

Sponsored employees may stay in Australia for the length of the visa validity period – the visa does not expire when the sponsorship expires. The maximum duration is for a period of four year.
